The gift of design.

At this festive season what better a way to kill some time than by flexing those design skills.

With an abundance of sofa-time and creative urges fuelled by sherry and mince pies I agreed to a couple of quick design jobs.

First up is @RabidGravy who needed a cover for his new remix E.P. Voodoo Slice:

Mr Gravy is yet to remark that I oopsed and added an extra 'S' to the word slice. I blame the sherry. Let's see if he notices ;)

Second up is @RthrTylr who wanted a new logo for Xmas, here's what he got:

Last up was myself. What use is Xmas if you can't treat yourself to little something too.
I'm not settled on the result quite yet but here's a recent rework of my own logo:

I hope everyone is enjoying the Xmas break.
Now let's buckle up for 2011.
Enjoy the ride.

Lull - The Remix E.P. Released

Greetings.

Remember I mentioned a remix I was producing for MikeWhitePresents?

The track is called Lull and it's featured on "Lull - The Remix E.P." and it's now available in iTunes and other digital outlets. My first track to arrive in a store anywhere actually (pops cork).

My Hushabye mix appears amongst a plethora of epic mixes created by some of Reverb Nation's finest.
Here's what MWP have to say about their release.

My version of the track is only available for download via MWP at the moment, however if you wish to hear my Hushabye remix in it's entirety here it is on Soundcloud...

It was a great opportunity to have a stab at something different.
Show MWP and these hard-working artists some love by offering your support.

Regards,

Remixing Mike White Presents

I've been remixing a track for the mighty Mike White Presents http://bit.ly/t0Vj0. It's totally unlike any track I've done before.

I don't get to play with vocals much so this venture has proved quite the challenge. I've been experimenting with Melodyne to modify the vocal performance without making it sound too much like a robot. It's been a real eye-opener.

The track is called Lull and you'll find the original on MWP's page.

More soon.

Moonglitch

Thought I'd share a short experimental track with you. I butchered Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata in a glitchy way.

Free to download and also released under CC Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 Unported for you to use in your own creative projects.

Getting to grips with the Canon 5DMKII

Retro Typewriter, originally uploaded by kgater.

Recently I've been out and about getting used to my 5DMKII.
It's quite the learning curve but I'm having lots of fun with it.
Here's some results from testing a Lensbaby FX lens which I'm intending to use for a dream effect on an upcoming video project.

You can see the rest of the Lensbaby set here on Flickr

Made the move to Vimeo

After a bit of a legal brush over music on YouTube I decided to host my video on Vimeo as well as YouTube. So far I prefer it, Vimeo seems to have higher quality content and delivers in better quality too.

Here is my second slow motion DLSR experiment hosted on Vimeo.

7d Slow Motion Test 2 from Kevin Gater on Vimeo.

The video is another quick test of the Canon 7D's slow-motion abilities. This time I shot in 60FPS 720p and converted it to 24FPS in After Effects before outputting to FCEx for editing.

7d Slow Motion Test

I’ve taken a short sidestep from the music this week to explore another of my passions - Film!
Here’s some test shots I made using a Canon 7D camera…

For the film geeks:
This is a quick no-frills test of the Canon 7D 50 FPS video function to achieve slow motion.
The frame-rate was adjusted to 25 FPS in After Effects and then cut in Final Cut Express.
The biggest headache I had was a slow memory card which would stop capturing after a few seconds.

It’s shot and edited in 720p.
There’s no colour correction and I’m using the EFS 15-85mm lens that came with the camera and focusing manually. It’s not the greatest lens for achieving a film look but might suit a straight shooter, for me the image was always too sharp.

I also used a monopod to avoid shake and was quite satisfied with how that and the camera stabilization turned out.

Without an external monitor it was a struggle to shoot anything that wasn’t eye-level.
I welcome questions and tips. I’m waiting for a 5D MKII to arrive but want to see how the 7D might be useful as a B-cam.

Miser & Remixes

It was a toss up between 'Miser' and 'Between Lines' for the Playlist 7 promo.
I figured Miser was too moody for Microsoft and went with the lighter track.
Now the moody one is unleashed into the wild and awaiting your ears.

I'd like to throw Miser out as a remix project. Just for fun.
If you are interested in remixing Miser get in touch.

Speaking of remixes... I just remixed Synoiz's track 'Darkling' which I'm delighted to hear he's happy with. Synoiz writes darkwave ambient soundtrack music, check him out here.

♥ A BIG THANKS! ... to everyone who supported me during Playlist 7, it was an exhausting week and I'm grateful to those that took time out to download the track, you guys rock! ♥

Truth be told... I felt I'd rushed the mix on 'Between Lines' getting it ready in time for the promo.

Ruby Redharez asked to lay down some extra instruments on the track and I saw it as an opportunity to tighten the mix. I think it was worth the extra effort., more soon.

Cheers,

Playlist 7

As announced a few days back - My new track 'Between Lines' is included in a Microsoft promo.

Endo%3EMesoQuantcast

Every little click helps, each download counts as a vote.

If I get enough votes I become a featured artist and win a bumper bag of sweets. Actually I win around 500 dollars. Which I'll use to invest in new studio equipment or give to charity, whichever has the best arguement.

Download the track here...

Between Lines on Microsoft Playlist 7

As of Monday a brand new track will be available for free download on Microsoft's Playlist 7 promotion.

Between Lines is an upbeat dubby-ska number, the track will be available free for one week.

Here's the catch...
To download the track you have to become a fan of Microsoft on Facebook, MySpace or Twitter.
It won't post anything sneaky to your profile and you are free to un-follow afterwards.

The most downloaded track will lead to that artist becoming featured on Playlist 7 the following week.

Featured on Around Midnight

Just a quick note to offer a warm thanks to Alex Hudish for featuring my track 'Elf & Ant' on his music podcast - Around Midnight.

"The idea behind the podcast is to set the stage for a diverse group of gifted musicians from around the globe, whose music transcends the limits of labels, countries or continents - and, in my opinion, simply deserves your attention. "

I Funked Yo Mamma

To kick off 2010 here's a funky number featuring Ruby Redharez.

I Funked Yo Mamma is the first track to feature vocals as well as a guest artist.

Ruby hails from The Netherlands, after meeting through Reverb Nation we decided to try a collaboration. This track had the right degree of funkitude to compliment Ruby's wickety-wah guitar style and trumpet skills.
Ruby's input helped take Mamma to a new level.

Here's the track: http://www.reverbnation.com/c./poni/7601468

Thanks for all the support and I wish you all a Happy New Year.
